Sore or Injured? 7 Warning Signs Every Sunday League Player Should Know
By Eilyad · Sunday League Kit · Updated October 2026
It’s Monday morning. You climb out of bed and your knee feels stiff, your calves are on fire and the stairs look like a mountain. Is this just the price of 90 minutes on a muddy pitch, or did something actually go wrong yesterday? Every Sunday league player knows this feeling. Most of us ignore it and hope for the best. Sometimes that works. Sometimes it turns a two-week problem into a six-month problem. This guide shows you how to spot football injury warning signs early.
IN 30 SECONDS
- Soreness feels dull, is spread over the whole muscle and gets better within 2 to 3 days.
- An injury hurts in one spot, is often sharp and does not get better on its own.
- Swelling, a joint that gives way or pain at night means: stop and get it checked.
26%
of football injuries in the Netherlands are knee injuries
21%
are ankle injuries

THE QUICK CHECK
Soreness or injury?
| Normal soreness | Possible injury | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it hurts | Whole muscle, both legs | One clear spot |
| Type of pain | Dull, stiff | Sharp, stabbing |
| When it starts | 12 to 48 hours after playing | During the match or right after |
| After 3 days | Almost gone | Same or worse |
THE 7 SIGNS
7 football injury warning signs
01
Sharp pain in one spot
Soreness is spread out. If you can point at the pain with one finger, and it stabs instead of aches, take it seriously.
02
Swelling within a few hours
A knee or ankle that looks puffy the same evening often means something inside is damaged. Muscles that are only tired do not swell up like that.
03
You can’t put weight on it
If you limp off and still can’t walk normally the next day, don’t wait for it to settle. Stop playing and get it looked at.
04
The joint gives way, locks or clicks
A knee that buckles when you turn, or gets stuck, can point to a ligament or meniscus problem. Playing on it can make it a lot worse.
05
No improvement after 72 hours
Normal soreness is clearly better by day three. If nothing has changed, your body is telling you something.
06
Pain at night or when resting
Muscles that are just tired calm down when you rest. Pain that wakes you up is not part of a normal recovery.
07
Numbness or tingling
Pins and needles in your foot or leg can mean a nerve is involved. Get this checked quickly.
?
Not sure? Get it checked.
One of these signs is enough. A physio visit costs less than a season on the bench.
HEAD KNOCK WARNING
Took a knock to the head and feel dizzy, sick or confused? That is not a “play on” moment. Stop straight away, don’t drive and call your GP or 112 if it gets worse.
FIRST AID
What to do in the first 48 hours
- Stop playing. One more half is never worth it.
- Cool the spot for 15 minutes, a few times a day. Always put a towel between the ice and your skin.
- Rest it, but keep moving gently if it doesn’t hurt.
- Put the leg up on a pillow to help with swelling.

★ MY PICK
Reusable cold pack
Keep it in the freezer at home. Wraps around a knee or ankle, cools for about 20 minutes and you can use it again for years.

WHEN TO GET HELP
When to see a GP or physio
Book an appointment if you notice any of the 7 signs, if you heard a “pop” when it happened, or if the pain is not clearly better after one week. A physio can also help you come back step by step, so the same injury does not return the next season. In the Netherlands you can go to a physio directly, without a referral from your GP. FAQ
Quick questions
Can I play through mild pain?
If it is dull soreness and you can run normally, usually yes. If it is sharp or you are changing how you run, no.
Heat or ice?
Ice in the first 48 hours of a fresh injury. Heat later, for stiff muscles.
How long should I rest?
Until you can walk, jog and turn without pain. For a small strain that is often 1 to 3 weeks.
