Recovery · the 48-hour plan

Final whistle.
Now what?

Recovery after a football match decides how you walk on Monday. This is the plan I wish I had before my injury: no gym, no €500 gadgets.

“I thought recovery was for professionals. It is not. It is for anyone who wants to play again next Sunday.”

— Eilyad, founder of Sunday League Kit

Why recovery after a football match matters

A 90-minute match means sprinting, stopping and turning, often after a week behind a desk. Your muscles get tiny tears, you lose fluid and salts, and your body needs time to repair.

Soreness the next day is normal. Skipping recovery every week is what turns small niggles into real injuries, and that is how many casual players end up quitting.

The good news: recovery does not have to cost money or time. Most of it is simple habits, like drinking water, eating a real meal and moving a little on Monday. Do it every week, not only after a hard match, and you will feel the difference within a month.

Hour by hour

Your recovery timeline

0–1 h

Cool down and drink

Walk for five minutes, stretch calves, hamstrings and quads, and drink half a litre of water before the bar.

Evening

Eat, roll, cool

A proper meal with protein and carbs. Then 15 minutes of foam rolling, or a cold pack on a sore spot.

Monday

Keep moving

A short walk or an easy bike ride beats sitting all day. Go to bed on time.

Tuesday

Check in

Still sharp pain or swelling? That is not soreness any more: get it checked by a physio or GP before you play again.

Budget picks

Cheap gear that actually helps

  • Foam roller · ± €14 loosens tight calves and thighs.
  • Cold pack · ± €10 calms swelling (always with a cloth).
  • Electrolyte drink · ± €20 replaces the salts you lost.
